Fossil Sea Urchins

These egg-like fossils are sea urchins called Echinocorys scutata and belong to the same family as starfish. They were found at in the former chalk quarry at Downend, near Fareham in the 1970s.

Echinocorys scutata fossils are commonly found in the white chalk of southern England when the area was covered in a warm shallow sea. They date to the Campanian Stage of the Cretaceous Period and are about 83.6 to 72.1 million years old.
